Japanese Ichimatsu Dolls, Gogatsu Ningyō, Glass Display Case, 1970s
This complete Japanese seasonal display (gogatsu ningyō) features two ichimatsu-ningyō presented in a glass case with a black, lacquered wooden frame and a hinged front panel.
Dimensions (display): height 43.5 cm, width 63 cm, depth 32 cm.
The figure on the left is seated in a deep navy, richly woven kimono with colourful floral motifs, holding sticks beside a small drum setup. On the right stands a girl in a vibrant orange kimono, holding a shishi (lion) head.
At the front, a wooden name plaque reads: Gogatsu ningyō (“May dolls”). On the reverse, an inscription states: “for Mr Ōta Kenichi,” most likely a dedication.
Traditionally, such “May dolls” were displayed around Tango no Sekku (May 5th, Boys’ Day) as a festive household display symbolising health, growth and protection. Today, this piece works beautifully as a display-cabinet object on a sideboard, console or in a wall cabinet—an instantly complete tableau that brings atmosphere and colour to an interior.
Condition is good: the dolls, textiles and display case have been well preserved, with only minor age-appropriate traces of use.
