Large Hina Ningyō — Emperor & Empress, complete court — 1980s
A richly detailed Hina display for Hina Matsuri: the Emperor and Empress before a gilt folding screen with bonbori lamps; below them three court ladies, five musicians, two ministers, and various court accessories (lacquered sake sets, hishimochi, fenced trees, palanquin, ritual implements). Finely modeled faces, multi-layered silk costumes, and lacquer with subtle gold accents.
The set comes with three original wooden tomobako inscribed 御雛 (“O-Hina”) plus a small cardboard box. The entire display with all accessories fits inside these three tomobako and the extra box. Condition is very good, with light, age-consistent wear.
Traditional use: Hina dolls are displayed from late February for the Girls’ Festival on 3 March, arranged in fixed order on a tiered stand with a red cover. After the festival they are carefully stored in the tomobako.
Contemporary value: Sought after for craftsmanship, textile quality, and refined lacquer details. A complete ensemble with original boxes also creates a strong decorative statement and a culturally resonant installation in an interior or gallery.
