Traditional Mizuya Tansu, Japanese Kitchen Chest, ca. 1890–1920
Characterful, two-part stackable mizuya tansu in solid softwood (typically sugi/hiinoki) with hand-forged iron fittings and a deep black-brown finish. Its rich patina—worn edges, old scratches and subtle color variation—embodies pure wabi-sabi: the beauty of time and use.
Dimensions: height 163 cm, width 115 cm, depth 41 cm.
Layout (top to bottom):
• four small sliding doors with round pull rings
• two sliding panels with a carved center rail and fine metal mesh
• four drawers with copper ring pulls
• lower section with slatted sliding doors and a fixed shelf
The sliders and drawers operate as they should, with the authentic charm expected of a true antique. Side panels show traditional cross-battens; the interior reveals a warm, natural wood tone.
A rare, sculptural piece that brings immediate warmth and texture to any space—a unique statement for both modern and Japanese interiors.
