Set of Japanese Porcelain Lidded Bowls, Futamono, 1970s
Atmospheric set of five Japanese porcelain bowls with lids – the classic type of lidded wan known in Japan as futamono.
They are made of fine sometsuke porcelain: clear white with an underglaze decoration in deep cobalt blue.
Dimensions per bowl: height 12 cm, diameter 15.5 cm.
Around the bowl and over the lid runs a rhythmic pattern of curved, intersecting lines with small dots at the crossings. It recalls a delicate lantern or net motif and follows the round shape of the bowls beautifully. With the lids on, the decor forms one continuous whole, which makes them particularly elegant on the table.
In Japanese cuisine, this type of futamono is used for rice, miso soup, steamed dishes or small courses in a more elaborate meal. In a contemporary setting they are also perfect for ramen, noodle soup, stews, or as serving bowls for rice and side dishes on a shared table.
The set is in very good condition; the glaze and decoration are fresh and free of damage.
