Product Details

Charming set of nine blue and white porcelain bowls from Japan. This type of small bowl is often referred to as “wan” in Japan: versatile bowls used for rice, soup, tea or small dishes.

Dimensions: height 6 cm, diameter 12 cm.

The exterior is richly decorated with a phoenix (hōō) among stylised leaves and scrolling tendrils. In Japanese symbolism, the phoenix stands for renewal, good fortune and harmonious times. Around the foot runs a band of geometric patterning that gives the bowls a refined, classical character.

Inside, the centre shows a circular motif with pine, bamboo and plum blossom – the well-known shōchikubai trio. These three plants represent endurance, resilience and new beginnings, together forming a powerful good-luck symbol often used for celebrations and auspicious wishes. Along the inner rim runs a deep cobalt-blue geometric border.

Dating from the mid-20th century, the set is in very good, almost pristine condition: a complete series of nine bowls, ready for everyday use. Perfect for serving tea or coffee, but equally beautiful for small snacks, desserts or tapas.

Beyond their practical function, these bowls also make a very decorative and authentic accent in a Japanese-inspired interior – lovely in an open cabinet, on a sideboard or stacked on a low table.
