​Pair of Traditional Nambu Kokeshi – Shintaro Tsunekawa, 1970s, Japan

A charming pair of traditional Japanese kokeshi by Shintaro Tsunekawa, crafted in the distinctive Nambu style.

Dimensions: Large H 30 cm × Ø 7 cm; small H 18.5 cm × Ø 7 cm.

These handcrafted wooden kokeshi are distinguished by their elegant, understated silhouettes and delicate painted details. The natural wood tones are subtly accented by fine horizontal bands of red and green, characteristic of Tsunekawa’s work.

The larger kokeshi features a rich, honey-toned finish, while its smaller companion displays a lighter wood colour. Both have developed a beautiful natural patina over time, enhancing their authentic vintage character.

The undersides bear Japanese signatures, with the larger example also featuring a handwritten date from 1978.
