Vintage Gumma Kokeshi by Fumio Tomidokoro, 1980s

Beautiful vintage Gumma kokeshi by Fumio Tomidokoro 富所ふみを, born in 1948. The wooden doll has an elegant, rounded form with a large dark hairstyle and a fine, understated face. The body is richly decorated with chrysanthemum motifs, burned into the wood using pyrography, combined with warm orange-red colour accents and a geometric kimono pattern in green, brown and red.

Dimensions: height 24 cm, foot diameter 12 cm.

The combination of linework, subtle colour and soft sheen gives this kokeshi a strong decorative presence. A characterful collector’s piece within the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi tradition, beautiful as a warm and graphic accent in a stylish interior.

Signed on the underside and marked with the artist’s stamp.

Condition: light signs of use consistent with age; well preserved and decoratively very strong.
