Black Bamboo Ikebana Vase, Take Hanaire, 1950s
Elegant tall ikebana vase from Japan, in the form of a traditional bamboo take hanaire.
Dimensions: height 60 cm, width 23 cm, depth 11 cm.
The vase is made from a section of bamboo with two slender, rising uprights and a wooden crossbar as a handle. The exterior is finished in black lacquer, allowing the vertical bamboo grain to remain subtly visible. Inside sits a copper liner intended to hold water and flowers.
This type of vase, take hanaire, is used in Japan for ikebana arrangements with long branches and flowers. Even without flowers it is a highly decorative object: as a sculptural floor vase, beside a sideboard or in a corner of the room, it adds a refined Japanese accent to any interior. With a few seasonal branches, grasses or a minimalist ikebana composition the piece really comes to life. The water tightness has not been tested; for use with water we recommend placing an extra glass insert inside.
In good vintage condition, with age-appropriate wear to lacquer and metal consistent with the piece’s use and character.
