Antique Chinese Altar Stand with Lacquer Decoration – 19th Century
Dimensions: height 56 cm – width 44 cm – depth 38 cm
Highly decorative 19th-century Chinese altar stand, also referred to as a “stand” or “offering stand” (gòngzhuō 供桌 or xiāngjī 香几). This elegant piece is richly adorned with refined lacquer decorations on a dark background. The entire surface features traditional scenes with priests, lush plant and floral motifs, as well as marine elements such as algae, crabs, and shells—symbols of spirituality and harmony with nature.
The lower tier displays a lively scene of playing Chinese children (Hundred Children or 百子图), a classic motif symbolizing happiness and prosperity. The top surface is made of unlacquered wood, creating a beautiful contrast with the richly decorated base.
The table was crafted using a traditional technique in which fabric was applied to the wooden surface and then lacquered.
Signs of age and use are clearly visible (see photos), including craquelure and surface wear. This natural patina highlights the piece’s authenticity. Structurally, the table remains in good condition.
This remarkable stand is not only a historical object, but also a versatile addition to a modern interior—as a plant stand, pedestal for ceramics, or a unique decorative accent with a rich visual presence.
