Antique Japanese Bunko Drawer Cabinet with Hidden Compartment, 1900s
This compact, almost square cabinet is a traditional bunko (文庫): a portable storage piece for paperwork and small essentials, designed to keep everything neatly organised and close at hand. The design is intentionally understated, with a strong, block-like silhouette and refined iron hardware that gives it immediate character.
Afmetingen: hoogte 35 cm, breedte 45 cm, diepte 41,5 cm.
The layout is practical and surprisingly clever. At the front are three drawers: one wide drawer at the bottom and two smaller drawers above. On top, a metal carry handle makes the cabinet easy to move from desk to shelf or from one room to another. The standout detail is hidden behind the upper left drawer: a secret compartment concealed at the back. It is accessed via the upper right drawer, as shown in the photos. The hidden box is long and narrow with a sliding lid, ideal for small valuables.
The exterior has developed a deep, warm reddish-brown patina over time, with honest signs of use that suit its age. Today, this piece works equally well as a functional organiser and as a calm, authentic accent in a modern interior.
