Product Details

Dimensions: height 55 cm, base diameter 24 cm.

An impressive Japanese wooden sculpture of Hotei, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods and commonly known in the West as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha.

The sculpture is carved from a single section of wood, with the natural tree trunk left visible as a substantial base. The figure itself is finished with a warm gilt-coloured paint layer, creating a beautiful contrast with the reddish-brown tone and pronounced grain of the wooden base.

Hotei is depicted with his characteristic bald head, broad smile and rounded exposed belly. He holds a fan in one hand, while a large cloth sack rests over his shoulder. Within Japanese tradition, Hotei symbolises happiness, contentment, generosity and abundance. He is also regarded as a protector of children and a benevolent figure associated with good fortune.

The richly folded robes, expressive facial features and carefully carved hands and feet demonstrate refined craftsmanship. Its generous proportions and combination of gilt wood with a natural trunk base give the sculpture a powerful, almost monumental presence.

Dating from the early Shōwa period, most likely the second quarter of the 20th century. A distinctive decorative object for a Japanese-inspired interior, meditation space, shop, gallery or collection of Asian sculpture.

In very good antique condition, without distracting damage. The gilt-coloured finish and wooden base show normal wear, minor discolouration and patina consistent with age and original use.

A warm and characterful Japanese sculpture traditionally associated with happiness, joy and abundance.
