Antique Japanese Ko-Dansu Storage Chest / Display Cabinet, c. 1870
This antique Japanese ko-dansu is an exceptional storage piece from the late Edo to early Meiji period. The cabinet has a dark lacquered surface, richly marked by use, wear and small visible traces that give the piece its strong character.
Dimensions: height 57.5 cm, width 54 cm, depth 30.5 cm.
The layout consists of three spacious upper drawers and three smaller drawers below, each with elegantly curved metal handles. A vertical locking bar at the centre blocks the drawers; the key is not present, but the bar can still be secured with the sliding mechanism. The finely decorated copper fittings, with floral and wave motifs, show a beautiful old oxidation with greenish accents.
Originally used for storing personal belongings, documents, textiles or valuable small objects, this ko-dansu now works beautifully as a compact storage cabinet, bedside piece, side cabinet or display for ceramics and selected objects. The dark lacquered wood, aged copper and graphic drawer layout bring a powerful Japanese accent to a stylish contemporary interior.
In good antique condition, with clear signs of use, lacquer wear and natural ageing consistent with age and function.
Solid, functional and exceptionally decorative.
