Antique Japanese Tansu Chest with Iron Fittings, 1900s
Authentic Japanese tansu from around 1900, crafted in paulownia (kiri) wood with characterful black forged-iron hardware.
Dimensions: height 54 cm, width 98 cm, depth 48 cm
The chest contains two generous drawers concealed behind a pair of front doors. Inside is a locking pin that secures the left door — a typical Japanese feature once used to keep clothing and documents safe. The round lock plate (no key) and the geometric iron surround create a striking graphic focal point. Two side carry handles are fitted for transport.
The wood shows a beautiful, deep patina with natural colour variations and light wear consistent with age, enhancing the piece’s wabi-sabi character.
An impressive yet understated cabinet that unites Japanese craftsmanship, function and simplicity. Ideal as a low storage unit, TV console, or display for ceramics and art objects.
