Product Details

This original Japanese sliding door (hikido) is a powerful architectural object with a deep, dark, timeworn surface and beautifully crafted wrought-iron hardware. It’s exactly the kind of piece that instantly anchors a room—calm, graphic, and strong all at once.

Dimensions: height 192.5 cm, width 138.5 cm, depth 6.5 cm. Dating: c. 1860.

The front reveals a richly layered surface shaped by decades of use. Scratches, discoloration, and wear have given the wood a unique texture and patina. As a result, the panel reads as a minimalist statement: one large, dark plane with subtle nuance—perfect for interiors that embrace contrast, quiet, and materiality.

The metal elements are the refined accents that elevate the whole. On the left, there is a decorative locking mechanism with floral motifs and a substantial lock plate. Lower on the panel, a second iron plate features an opening to operate the lock. The original locking system is visible on the back.

In a contemporary setting, this piece works beautifully as a wall panel in a minimalist interior, loft, or retail space: leaned against the wall as a sculptural object, placed behind a low sofa, used as a clean backdrop for ceramics and art, or set in an entryway to create an immediate architectural atmosphere.
