Compact Vintage Japanese Tansu Chest, 1930s
Atmospheric and compact Japanese drawer chest, likely dating from the 1930s–1940s. The piece is made of paulownia wood and features a warm, lived-in patina with a quiet, understated presence that fits beautifully in a wabi-sabi interior.
Dimensions: height 39 cm, width 27.5 cm, depth 30.5 cm.
The front has three practical drawers with typical Japanese metal pull handles. The bottom drawer includes a small lock plate with a keyhole (key not included) — an authentic detail that hints at its original purpose as a storage chest for documents and personal belongings. The drawers slide smoothly and offer a surprising amount of storage space.
Thanks to its compact size, this tansu is perfect as a small cabinet on a desk or sideboard. Ideal for jewellery, writing tools, documents, chargers, mail, and other small items you want to keep close at hand but neatly organised. It also works beautifully in a hallway, bedroom, studio, or creative workspace.
In good vintage condition, with use marks and subtle edge wear that enhance the character and authenticity of this Japanese piece. A discreet yet decorative accent for any lover of Japanese interiors.
