Product Details

Very nice Japanese tray from Aomori prefecture in Tsugaru Nuri lacquer.

Tsugaru-nuri starts with 48 base layers, all of which must dry completely before progress can be made. Then the pattern layers are painted. To achieve Kara-nuri's signature pattern, a spatula-like tool called a shikake-bera is used to apply the resin. Finally, several layers of the surface layers are applied and allowed to dry.
After the application of the surface layers is completed, the pattern is brought forward by sanding and polishing with wet sandpaper. End result is beautiful mottled pattern with depth and shine. Whole process, from start to finish, can take more than 60 days.
Some call Tsugaru-nuri 'the lacquerware of the fool', because only a fool would spend so much time on a single piece.
Very good condition, without damage.
We pack our items very carefully.
