Large and characterful Tanuki figure in Shigaraki earthenware, dating from the 1960s–1970s, Shōwa period, Japan.
Dimensions: height 50 cm, width 35 cm, depth 24 cm.
This Tanuki figure is made from glazed Shigaraki earthenware and has a beautiful rustic appearance. The dark brown-black glaze, white belly and expressive eyes give the piece a lively and friendly character. The large straw hat on its back, sake bottle, walking stick and pouch are classic features of the Japanese tanuki.
The tanuki is a well-known figure from Japanese folklore: a mischievous raccoon dog associated with luck, hospitality, prosperity and protection. In Japan, tanuki figures are often placed near the entrance of homes, shops and restaurants as a symbol of welcome and good fortune in business.
