Large Traditional Japanese Bucket with Handle – Teoke, 1900s

This traditional Japanese wooden bucket, or teoke, is a large and remarkably warm utilitarian object with a strong, understated presence.

Dimensions: height 55 cm, diameter 37.5 cm.

The dark, aged wood has developed a rich, deep patina through many years of use, with beautiful tonal variation, signs of wear, and a sheen that can only come from time and handling. It is precisely this weathered surface that gives the piece its character and makes it so appealing as a decorative object.

The bucket is constructed from wooden staves held together by two metal bands, creating a strong and simple silhouette. The tall, curved carrying handle gives the object additional presence. This type of bucket was likely used for water, possibly also at a well, although we have not tested its watertightness.

Today, it remains above all a particularly atmospheric interior piece. Thanks to its size and warm appearance, it works beautifully as a cachepot, as a holder for large branches or dried material, or simply as a decorative accent in a calm, natural interior. An honest and characterful Japanese object in which use, material, and time come together beautifully.
