Japanese Sumi-e Landscape Panel, Wall Decoration, 1950s
Hand-painted Japanese landscape panel on paper, signed with the characters 周永, dating to the Shōwa period, 1950s.
Dimensions: H 46 cm, W 136 cm, D 1.5 cm.
Executed in sumi-e (black ink on paper) with beautiful washes that suggest mist, depth and water. A river flows between rocky banks; on either side dense vegetation, and in the center a narrow wooden bridge crossed by a walker with a staff—a classic Japanese motif of travel and quietude. In the distance, trees and hills fade into haze, giving the panorama its characteristic Japanese depth.
Mounted on a gold-yellow textile ground with a subtle floral pattern and finished with a wooden frame.
Ideal above a sideboard, sofa or in a hallway as an Oriental accent.
Condition: good and decorative vintage condition with honest age traces—overall toning, a few small spots and foxing, and slight discoloration along the top edge; the back shows older water marks on the backing board that are not disturbing from the front (see photos). The patina lends a pleasing, lived-in character.
