Japanese tanuki statue made of Shigaraki ware, dating from circa 1960, Shōwa period, Japan.

The figure is finished in dark brown-black tones with a pale belly and has the expressive, humorous appearance typical of traditional Shigaraki tanuki.

Dimensions: height 35 cm, width 24 cm, depth 18 cm.

The tanuki wears a large hat and is depicted with several traditional details, including a bottle at its side. The surface shows clear signs of age and use, with areas of wear to the finish that enhance its authentic vintage character.

Shigaraki tanuki are a well-known part of Japanese folk culture and are traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. A characterful and decorative example from the mid-Shōwa period.
