Japanese Bamboo Basket, Washi and Calligraphy, 1950s
Handmade Japanese basket woven from bamboo, fully covered with warm brown washi paper and painted all around with expressive calligraphy in black ink. The text includes, among other things, references to a shrine.
Dimensions: height 9 cm, diameter 30 cm.
The low, wide bowl shape opens gently towards the top, with a slightly irregular rim that gives the basket a handcrafted, almost sculptural presence. The layers of paper and the visible lines in the underlying structure create a rich, textured surface with a beautifully aged patina.
In a contemporary interior this piece is a highly versatile object: used as a fruit bowl on the table or as a shallow bowl for dried flowers or seasonal decoration.
A beautiful and authentic interior accent that brings Japanese craftsmanship into the home in an understated way.
