Japanese Wooden Kadai / Display Stand / Plant Stand, 1990s
Striking Japanese wooden kadai, a tall plant stand or decorative display pedestal, made as a sotsugyō kinen seisaku: a commemorative graduation work.
Dimensions: height 82 cm, width 42 cm, depth 42 cm.
The pedestal has an octagonal shape and is built from separate wooden panels with hand-carved relief decoration. Various motifs are carved around the piece, including flowers, leaves, a dragon, animals, landscapes, sports scenes, Japanese characters and everyday school-related or symbolic imagery. The warm wood tones, naïve carving and handcrafted finish give the object a charming and distinctive character.
One side features a white panel that can be used as a small whiteboard or note surface, adding an unusual and playful detail.
Today, this kadai works beautifully as a plant stand, display pedestal or base for ceramics, bonsai, ikebana, sculpture or a small art object. Thanks to its height and carved panels on all sides, it is both practical and decorative in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, vintage, artistic or eclectic interior.
In very good vintage condition, with light signs of age and use consistent with its age.
A unique Japanese object with a warm presence, strong decorative character and an interesting story.
