Japanese Wooden Kadai / Display Pedestal, Plant Stand, 1996
Striking Japanese kadai, a tall wooden plant stand or decorative display pedestal, made as a commemorative graduation piece in Japan and dated 1996.
Dimensions: height 80 cm, width 47.5 cm, depth 47.5 cm.
The pedestal has an octagonal shape and is built with individual wooden panels, each decorated with hand-carved relief work. The scenes include birds, flowers, sunflowers, fish, a panda, squirrel, tiger, cat and other animal and nature motifs. The naïve carving, warm wood tone and visible handmade character give the piece a charming and distinctive presence.
At the top is a black plastic plaque with an inscription referring to a graduation commemorative work from the school year Heisei 8, corresponding to 1996. Additional Japanese inscriptions at the lower section include the class reference and names of pupils who took part in the project.
Today, this kadai works beautifully as a plant stand, display pedestal, stand for ceramics, bonsai, ikebana, sculpture or a small art object. Its height and carved panels make it both practical and decorative in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, vintage, artistic or eclectic interior.
In authentic vintage condition, with light signs of use and age consistent with its material, age and handmade nature.
A unique Japanese object with a warm appearance, playful details and a lovely personal story.
