Vintage Japanese Ichimatsu Doll Display, Sangatsu Ningyō, 1970s

This complete Japanese seasonal display is presented in a wide glass showcase with a black lacquered wooden frame. The case has a hinged, opening front and a gold-toned background with a fine grid pattern, giving the scene a calm and refined appearance.

Dimensions: height 43.5 cm, width 71 cm, depth 37.5 cm.

Inside are two Ichimatsu-style dolls. The figure on the left wears a light, richly woven kimono with floral motifs and holds a small hand drum. The figure on the right wears a vibrant orange kimono with geometric and floral patterns and holds a cord with a large gold-coloured bell attached. Together they form a balanced and lively tableau.

Traditionally, such displays were set up as household altars during Hinamatsuri (March 3rd) and are known as Sangatsu Ningyō (March dolls). They symbolise good fortune, health, and protection for the household.

Today, this piece functions primarily as a colourful decorative object that brings Japanese seasonal culture into an interior in an elegant and expressive way.

The condition is good: the dolls, textiles, and display case have been well preserved, with only light age-appropriate traces.
