Japanese Calligraphy Wall Piece, “Reverence for the Ancestors”, 1950s
Elegant Japanese calligraphy in classical kanbun style, handwritten on fine, fibrous washi paper. The text is mounted on a gold background and framed in dark wood.
Dimensions: height 37 cm, width 76.5 cm, depth 1.5 cm.
The text is from the Imperial Rescript on Education (Kyōiku Chokugo) — a tribute to honour, loyalty, and ancestral virtue, a traditional theme in both Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. It emphasizes respect for parents, harmony within the family, and devotion to the community. Such moral writings were often displayed in schools or temples as ethical and aesthetic guidance.
Signed in ink at the lower left, followed by a red hanko seal reading Gozan Chiyoji, the artist’s name.
The brushwork is controlled and rhythmic, with gentle variations in ink tone — characteristic of mid-20th-century Japanese calligraphy.
A refined and meaningful piece radiating calm strength — perfect for a Japanese, wabi-sabi, or zen interior.
In good, authentic condition with minor age-related foxing on the paper.
