Japanese Kodansu Storage Chest, Small Tansu Drawer Cabinet, 1910s
This compact Japanese tansu (kodansu) is a small drawer cabinet that was traditionally used to keep personal belongings and everyday essentials neatly organised, often in the home or in a workspace.
Dimensions: height 44 cm, width 54.5 cm, depth 31.5 cm.
The layout is smart and very practical: a wide full-width drawer at the top, a large drawer on the left with two smaller drawers on the right in the middle section, and another wide drawer at the bottom. In total, five drawers in different sizes—ideal for separating smaller items and finding things quickly.
The wood has a deep, dark-brown tone with beautiful age marks and wear in the most frequently handled areas. On the top, a striking old ink stain hints at the cabinet’s past: an honest trace of use that adds character without feeling distracting in a contemporary interior. The understated metal bail pulls and ring handles keep the look calm and timeless.
Today, this piece works wonderfully for storing writing and drawing tools, brushes, stamps, sewing supplies, or other small studio essentials. It also makes a warm accent in an atelier, on a desk, on a sideboard, or in the hallway for keys and accessories.
A unique piece with plenty of atmosphere and genuinely practical storage.
Condition: in good condition with normal signs of age and use. Sturdy, fully functional, and ready to use.
