Japanese Kokeshi by Moriharu Kitayama, circa 1980
Distinctive Japanese wooden kokeshi dating from around 1980, crafted by Moriharu Kitayama, an artisan of the Tsugaru tradition from Aomori Prefecture.
Dimensions: H 30 × diameter 8.5 cm
The slender, elegantly shaped figure is hand-painted in warm red and black tones. A red Japanese maple leaf decorates the body, while the lower section features an expressive depiction of Daruma, a traditional Japanese good luck figure symbolising perseverance and resilience.
The combination of refined brushwork, colourful patterns and natural wood grain reflects the rich tradition of Japanese kokeshi craftsmanship. The underside bears the maker's signature and Japanese calligraphy.
A characterful example of Japanese folk art that makes a refined decorative accent in a Japanese-inspired, wabi-sabi or contemporary interior.
Good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and areas of paint wear consistent with age.
