Vintage Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi by Takanashi Hanpuushi, 1960s

This vintage Japanese sōsaku kokeshi is an elegant and restrained work by Takanashi Hanpuushi, a maker known for his refined, minimal approach. The doll has an exceptionally slender silhouette, made from warm natural wood with a beautiful visible grain.

Dimensions: height 27.5 cm, diameter 6 cm.

The face is very subtly rendered, with fine eye lines, a small nose mark and a simple incised outline that suggests the hair and facial shape. The long, almost abstract body is defined with only a few quiet lines, allowing the natural wood grain to become an important part of the design.

At the lower back there is a small signature/inscription by the maker. The kokeshi likely dates from the 1960s.

In good vintage condition, with light signs of age and use consistent with its age.

A calm and sculptural kokeshi, beautiful as a collector’s piece or as a subtle Japanese accent in a minimalist contemporary interior.
