Japanese Mizuya Tansu, Storage Cabinet, 1900–1920

Characterful Japanese mizuya tansu, a traditional storage cabinet for kitchen and household use, with a layout that still feels exceptionally practical today. This type of piece is generally described as a mizuya-dansu: a functional cabinet with sliding doors and drawers for tableware, food storage, kitchen utensils, and small household items.

Dimensions: height 129 cm, width 82 cm, depth 45 cm.

The cabinet has a strong, well-balanced composition with three compartments fitted with sliding doors, two of which feature finely spaced vertical slats that give the front a refined rhythm. On the right is a vertical row of smaller drawers, complemented below by wider drawers and two deep bottom drawers spanning almost the full width. Together, they create a total of eight drawers in different sizes, making this piece both visually engaging and highly practical.

The wood has developed a deep, richly darkened tone that only time and long use can create. The understated handles, dark finish, and clear division of space give the cabinet a calm, lived-in presence, with exactly the restrained strength that works so well in a wabi-sabi or minimalist interior.

Today, this piece works beautifully as a storage cabinet in a kitchen, living space, studio, or shop interior.
