Product Details

This long, horizontal ranma panel is carved in openwork wood (sukashibori) with a beautifully layered sense of depth.

Dimensions: height 31.5 cm, width 176.5 cm, depth 3 cm.

The design reads as a classic, serene landscape: a gently arched bridge spans the centre, surrounded by stylised pine trees with fan-like needles. To the left and in the background, you can make out rock and mountain forms, with a subtle architectural reference in the shape of a roofline or pavilion, partly hidden within the scenery. The open cut-outs create a strong interplay of light, shadow and negative space, while visible tool marks and the natural wood grain add movement and character.

As ranma were originally intended, this panel would have been installed above sliding doors to allow light and air to pass through without fully opening up the room. Today, it works exceptionally well as wall décor: a long statement piece above a low cabinet or sideboard, above a doorway, or as an accent panel in a calm, minimalist interior. In a more eclectic setting, it instantly brings rhythm and authenticity, with the warmth of truly hand-carved wood. The panel is finished on both sides, so it looks beautiful from either direction.

Condition: good condition, with minimal, honest signs of age and use.

Shipping & pickup: pickup in Antwerp possible; worldwide shipping on request.
