Japanese Tansu Storage Chest with Sliding Doors and Drawer, 1910s
Characterful, minimalist Japanese tansu with a practical layout: behind the two sliding doors is a generous storage compartment with a shelf, and below is a deep drawer. Dated to the late Meiji period.
Dimensions: height 84 cm, width 85 cm, depth 45.5 cm.
The wood shows a warm reddish-brown tone with a pronounced, flame-like grain. The frame is crafted from lightweight sugi (Japanese cedar) with a soft, even texture; the drawer and door fronts are in beautifully figured keyaki (Japanese zelkova) with the characteristic undulating lines. Hand-forged iron pulls and a slim lock plate accentuate the piece.
Thanks to its compact, wide format, this is not only a warm wabi-sabi accent but also an authentic display for ceramics, ikebana, or plants. A timeless cabinet that effortlessly blends atmosphere and functionality.
