Jubako with Kamon, Traditional Stacking Boxes, 1950s, Japan

Product Details

A beautiful Japanese wooden jubako dating from the mid-20th century, consisting of two stackable compartments and a matching lid.

Dimensions when stacked: H 15.5 × W 21 × D 20 cm.

The boxes are finished in warm vermilion-red lacquer and decorated with a gold-coloured kamon, a traditional Japanese family crest featuring a stylised floral motif.

The interiors are lacquered in the same rich orange-red hue, while the undersides are finished in black. Delicate gold-coloured detailing along the upper rims of both compartments adds a refined touch to their softly rounded form.

Jubako were traditionally used to serve food on festive occasions, particularly during Japanese New Year celebrations. Today, they are equally appealing as decorative storage for jewellery, sewing supplies and small accessories, or for presenting nuts and other treats.

In good vintage condition, with light signs of use and natural age-related discolouration. Over time, the wooden lid has developed a gentle curve, meaning it does not sit entirely flush along every edge. This is subtle and does not detract from the piece’s authentic character.

A distinctive example of Japanese lacquerware, combining traditional craftsmanship with practical use in a contemporary interior.
