Mid-Century Shino Chawan Tea Bowl – Japan, 1970s
Authentic, handcrafted Shino chawan from Japan, made in the 1970s.
Dimensions: height 17 cm, diameter 11.5 cm.
The bowl features a classic, slightly asymmetrical form that sits comfortably in the hand. Its surface is coated in a thick Shino glaze in soft tones of pink-beige to warm cream, enriched with a fine crackle pattern. Around the foot, subtle orange flame marks (hi-iro) from the firing process enhance the artisanal character of the piece.
The underside reveals a beautifully spiraled potter’s foot with a partially impressed kiln mark, not fully legible, underscoring its unique, handmade nature.
A refined tea bowl for the Japanese tea ceremony and the preparation of matcha, yet equally suited for enjoying a flavorful cup of coffee or tea in daily life – a vessel that truly elevates the taste of your drink.
An authentic and atmospheric piece that perfectly embodies the essence of Japanese ceramics and the warm aesthetics of Shino ware.
