Monumental Apotropaic Mask, Gennaro Condurso, Italy

A monumental ceramic wall mask from Seminara in Calabria, made by Gennaro Condurso.

A handmade and unique piece, of which only one example exists.

This exceptionally large mask features a powerful anthropomorphic face, imaginatively modelled with striking eyes, a broad nose, visible teeth, an open mouth and a vivid red tongue. Red horn-like protrusions and a rough, almost flame-shaped border surround the face, giving the piece an intense, ritual and almost mythical character.

The lively glazes in yellow, deep green, black, red and earthy tones flow freely across the surface and enhance the expressive modelling. Through its scale, relief and glossy finish, the work has an impressive presence and makes a particularly strong statement when displayed on a wall.

The mask is closely connected to the traditional maschere apotropaiche of Seminara: protective ceramic masks used in Southern Italy to ward off evil, misfortune or the evil eye. Gennaro Condurso gives this classical theme a highly personal, sculptural and imaginative interpretation.

The reverse is signed and dated by the artist.
