Unique Ceramic Medusa Bust, Gennaro Condurso, Italy
An expressive ceramic Medusa bust from Seminara, the renowned ceramics village in Calabria, made by Gennaro Condurso, member of a ceramic family that has been producing traditional pottery for generations.
Dimensions: height 26 cm, width 17 cm, depth 15 cm. Weight: 3 kg.
This sculptural bust depicts Medusa, the mythical figure from ancient Greek mythology, recognisable by the snakes surrounding her head. In classical mythology, Medusa was both feared and seen as protective; her image was often used as a powerful symbol against evil.
The work is entirely handmade and richly glazed. The soft pink skin tones contrast beautifully with the dark, almost black and deep green snakes curling around the head. The half-closed eyes, open mouth, elongated neck and expressive modelling give the bust a dramatic, almost theatrical presence.
With its glossy glaze, rough hand-shaped surface, visible brushstrokes and sculptural details, this piece feels at once archaic, folkloric and contemporary. A strong object that connects beautifully with Southern Italian ceramic traditions, while also working perfectly as a striking interior accent.
The back of the artwork bears the signature of Gennaro Condurso.
Beautiful on a pedestal, low cabinet, bookshelf or among art and ceramic objects. A unique and highly decorative work with great character, ideal for an interior that welcomes a powerful and distinctive accent.
Contemporary work, in perfect condition.
