Monumental Japanese Keyaki Wood Sculptural Object, 1950s
This monumental sculptural object from Japan dates from the 1950s–1960s and is crafted from solid root wood. The piece is deliberately shaped around the natural growth of the wood: flowing lines, knots, cavities, and inclusions have not been concealed, but instead carefully embraced to create a powerful, organic composition.
Dimensions: height 63 cm, width 109 cm, depth 29 cm.
Based on the grain pattern, the warm reddish-brown core, and the evident density, the wood is most likely keyaki (Japanese zelkova), a high-quality Japanese hardwood renowned for its expressive grain and exceptional durability. The surface has been carefully polished, with a subtle sheen on the raised areas that brings the wood’s structure beautifully to life.
The sculpture rests on a simple wooden base that subtly elevates the piece and enhances its presence, without distracting from the wood itself. Together, sculpture and base form a strong, balanced object that feels both raw and refined.
In a contemporary interior, this piece functions perfectly as an autonomous art object. It is particularly striking in a minimalist or architectural setting, where it provides a warm, natural counterpoint to clean lines and calm materials. It is also beautifully suited to being styled with ikebana, a bonsai, or a selection of strong ceramic pieces, and works exceptionally well in a spacious entrance hall or as a focal point in a gallery, showroom, or concept space.
A strong and timeless piece for lovers of natural forms, Japanese design, and sculptural objects with character and presence.
