Product Details

A hand-carved Nipopo with warm wood tones and a lively grain.

Dimensions: height 24 cm, diameter approximately 8 cm.

Made by inmates of Abashiri Prison in Hokkaido.

`The underside bears a sinature: 網走刑務所, meaning “Abashiri Prison”.

Nipopo means “little wooden child” in the Ainu language; these figures are traditionally associated with good fortune.

The serene face, layered hair and faceted body bring out the natural grain of the solid wood. A warm, distinctive accent on a shelf, sideboard or desk.

In lovely vintage condition, with a well-preserved wood surface.
