Japanese Wooden Chair with Kamakura-bori Carving, circa 1950
Distinctive Japanese wooden chair dating from around 1950, featuring a sculptural design and pronounced wood carving in the Kamakura-bori style.
Dimensions: H 79 × W 43 × D 52 cm
Seat height: 41.5 cm
The chair is crafted from dark brown wood and features a characteristic backrest with three vertical elements and a subtle handhold at the top. The broad seat and four angled legs give the design a robust, balanced appearance.
The surface is richly textured with geometric chisel marks, inspired by the traditional Japanese Kamakura-bori technique. This artisanal wood-carving style creates a lively relief in which light and shadow emphasise the natural wood grain. The warm, dark finish enhances the sculptural character of the chair.
A distinctive example of Japanese furniture craftsmanship, combining functionality with decorative appeal. Its strong lines, natural materials and refined handwork make it a beautiful addition to wabi-sabi, minimalist or contemporary interiors.
Good vintage condition with normal scratches, areas of wear and minor signs of use consistent with age.
