Set of Two Kijiyama Kokeshi – Kenichi Kitayama, 1980s, Japan
A pair of traditional Japanese kokeshi by Kenichi Kitayama, crafted in the Kijiyama tradition of Akita Prefecture.
Dimensions: larger H 31 cm, smaller H 27 cm. Diameter of both: 5.5 cm.
These two handcrafted wooden kokeshi feature slender, graceful silhouettes and beautifully detailed, colourful decorations. The warm, natural tones of the wood create a striking contrast with the vibrant floral motifs.
The taller kokeshi features a distinctive kimono with vertical stripes in deep black, red and green, complemented by large red chrysanthemums and delicate branches. The smaller figure is richly decorated with chrysanthemums in shades of red and soft purple, accompanied by finely painted foliage in muted green tones.
A delightful detail is the small, black-painted ponytail at the back of each head.
Subtle differences in shape and decoration give each figure its own individual character, while together they form a harmonious composition.
Both kokeshi bear the handwritten Japanese signature of Kenichi Kitayama on the back.
In lovely vintage condition, with a natural patina and gentle signs of age.
A refined and collectible pair that beautifully captures the craftsmanship and expressive character of traditional Japanese folk art.
