Product Details

This set of five Tokoname-yaki yunomi is made from the iconic brick-red shudei clay and decorated with a delicate camellia relief (tsubaki – 椿).

Dimensions (each cup): height 5 cm, diameter 7 cm.

The shape is compact and pleasantly rounded, with a matte surface that highlights the warm tone of the clay. The floral motif is modelled in soft relief with finely incised leaf veins, giving the decoration subtle depth. Each cup bears a small impressed stamp mark on the underside.

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) originates from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture and is considered one of Japan’s “Six Ancient Kilns”. Pottery has been made there since the 12th century. In the modern period, Tokoname became especially known for shudei—an iron-rich clay whose distinctive red-orange colour comes from its high iron content. In the world of tea, shudei is highly valued for everyday use, notably for kyusu teapots and yunomi.

Contemporary use: ideal for sencha, genmaicha or hojicha; also beautiful as small serving cups for dessert, nuts, or an aperitif moment.
