Set of 2 Vintage Kokeshi – Sanpei Yamanaka, Japan, 1970s

A delightful and playfully designed set of two kokeshi dolls by renowned Japanese artisan Sanpei Yamanaka (山中三平). The larger of the two is signed on the base by the maker.

Both dolls feature a simple, rounded form with subtle facial expressions and are adorned with hand-painted floral decorations on their bodies. The soft color palette and understated design lend the set a poetic, nostalgic charm.

Sanpei Yamanaka received multiple awards throughout his career. In 1979, he was honored with the Prize from the Ministry of Education at the All Nippon Modern Kokeshi Exhibition.
