Set of 2 Traditional Tsuchiyu Kokeshi, 1960s, Japan
A decorative pair of traditional Japanese kokeshi from the 1960s, crafted in the Tsuchiyu style.
Dimensions: H 31 cm and H 25 cm × Ø 6.5 cm.
These handcrafted wooden kokeshi are distinguished by their elegant, elongated silhouettes and refined painted decoration. Rhythmic horizontal bands in vermilion red, deep black and muted purple create a striking graphic contrast against the warm, natural wood tones.
The distinctive red hair ornaments and concentric circular motifs on top of the heads are characteristic of the traditional Tsuchiyu school.
Both kokeshi feature Japanese calligraphy on their bases. The smaller doll bears the signature of Satō Sashima (1907–1985), a renowned Japanese kokeshi artist. The maker of the larger doll has not been definitively identified.
In beautiful vintage condition, with a rich natural patina and gentle signs of age that enhance their authentic character.
Two distinctive examples of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, forming a particularly appealing duo for collectors and admirers of Japanese folk art.
