Jef van Tuerenhout (Mechelen, 23 May 1926 - Wenduine, 4 March 2006) was a Belgian painter, sculptor, ceramist, engraver and jewellery designer. In his filled career, his style evolved from bitter miserabilism, Flemish expressionism to neo-expressionism. Finally, this culminated in a slightly erotic , sensual style on the border between surrealism and magic realism. He is sometimes called Belgium's last surrealist. Jef van Tuerenhout spent his youth in Mechelen. He studied painting and sculpture at the St-Lucas Academy in Brussels during World War II. He was awarded the Academy's Honorary Prize there. From his year, only two artists became professional painters: himself and Armand Minner. He himself admits that he had in fact learned little or nothing at the academy and barely knew the difference in use between turpentine and white spirit.
