Product Details

A charming pair of traditional Japanese Tachibina figures, entirely handcrafted from papier-mâché and richly hand-painted.

Dimensions of largest figure: H 22 × W 16 × D 7 cm (approx.)

The two figures represent an imperial couple associated with Hinamatsuri, the Japanese Doll Festival, symbolising happiness, protection and prosperity. Their elegant court robes are beautifully decorated with wisteria, pine trees and geometric patterns in vibrant colours. Wisteria symbolises elegance and prosperity, while the pine tree represents longevity.

Both figures bear a red artist's seal and handwritten inscriptions on the underside, dating them to 1959, during the Shōwa period. The inscriptions also refer to the 73-year-old maker.

A beautifully decorative pair with a charming, artisanal character. Particularly attractive displayed together on a console, sideboard or as a colourful accent in a contemporary interior.

Both figures are in perfect condition.
