Shigaraki Earthenware Tanuki Figure, 1970s, Japan
A Japanese tanuki figure crafted in Shigaraki earthenware, dating from around 1970, with a distinctive character and a richly varied glaze.
Dimensions: H 26 × W 16 × D 15.5 cm.
This tanuki is distinguished by its green-glazed cloak, draped over the shoulders and framing the rounded, pale-coloured belly. The expressive face, finely detailed fur and warm combination of green, brown and black give the figure a lively character.
The back bears an impressed Japanese maker's mark, Rian (狸庵), a well-known Shigaraki workshop with a long tradition of producing tanuki figures.
In Japanese folklore, the tanuki symbolises good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. These figures are traditionally placed outside homes, shops and restaurants to attract good luck and wealth.
In good vintage condition.
