Traditional Japanese Kimono Tansu Chest of Drawers – 1920s
Authentic Japanese tansu from the Taishō–early Shōwa era, crafted in paulownia (kiri) wood with forged-iron hardware. The chest has two wide drawers with simple iron pulls and square lock plates, and side carry handles for transport. It sits on a later-added wooden base, which gives the piece a pleasing, slightly elevated stance without disturbing its original character.
Dimensions: height 61 cm, width 98 cm, depth 47.5 cm.
The wood shows a beautiful, lived-in patina with lively age marks and colour variations—wear consistent with use that enhances the tansu’s wabi-sabi presence. Smooth-running drawers make it practical for everyday storage, while the clean lines and restrained metalwork keep the look calm and minimal.
A versatile, understated piece that works perfectly as a low storage cabinet, an authentic interior accent, or a display for ceramics and art objects.
