Traditional Japanese Low Writing Desk, Fumizukue, 1910s
This elegant low writing desk is a classic Japanese floor piece, known in Japan as a fumizukue (文机): a low desk traditionally used on tatami for writing, drawing, and storing paper items. Its proportions are both refined and practical, with a generous top, graceful side panels, and two full-width drawers.
Dimensions: height 31 cm, width 65.5 cm, depth 35 cm.
What stands out immediately are the drawer fronts with their lively, wavy wood grain. Combined with the restrained silhouette and the subtle copper pulls, the desk has a warm, understated presence. The cut-out details in the side panels add lightness and character, making it a distinctive piece that works beautifully placed freely in a room.
Today, this low table fits perfectly in a contemporary interior. Use it as a low writing desk, a laptop or reading table beside a floor cushion, a low coffee table, or a display surface for ceramics, books, ikebana, or a sculptural object. Thanks to its low profile and strong wood figure, it feels both calm and impactful.
Condition: in beautiful, well-kept condition with normal signs of age and use, such as small scratches and light wear to the edges and top, consistent with an authentic Japanese piece.
