Vintage Gunma Kokeshi by Miyagawa Kunio, 1970s

Beautiful vintage Gunma kokeshi by Miyagawa Kunio, an award-winning Japanese kokeshi artist. The wooden doll has an elegant, elongated form with a large black hairstyle, fine eye lines and a subtle red mouth. The warm-toned kimono is hand-decorated with red floral motifs, graphic lines and a striking obi in red and soft green.

Dimensions: height 22 cm, diameter 9 cm.

Some of the decorative lines are created with wood-burning techniques, giving the floral motif and kimono extra depth and texture. The combination of soft form, warm colours and refined linework gives this kokeshi a graceful, calm presence.

A characterful collector’s piece within the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi tradition, beautiful as a decorative accent in a stylish interior. Marked on the underside with the artist’s original label.

Condition: light signs of use consistent with age; well preserved and decoratively strong.
