Vintage Japanese Wooden Apothecary Drawer Box, 1980s
The front is decorated with Japanese text, a green medical cross and a metal handle. The large text at the top translates as “health first”. Below, the cabinet carries the name of a Japanese pharmaceutical company, Toyamado Yakuhin Co., Ltd., with an address in Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo. A telephone number and a Free Dial number are also shown. The round seal refers to an official recognition within the Japanese household medicine distribution system.
The drawer is divided into practical wooden compartments, originally intended for medicines or small care products. Today, the cabinet is beautifully suited for storing small objects, jewellery, stationery, textile tools or other personal collectibles.
On the reverse are two round openings. These were made so the drawer could be gently pushed forward from the back if it became difficult to open. The top is also marked with a green cross, reinforcing its original medical character.
The cabinet is made from warm light-toned wood with a visible grain structure and bold black Japanese typography. The combination of functional design, Japanese lettering, metal handle and sober construction gives the piece a very attractive decorative presence.
A charming and unusual Japanese storage cabinet with strong graphic appeal. Perfect as a decorative interior accent in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, vintage or eclectic interior, while also being practical as a small organiser for jewellery, objects or collected curiosities.
