Vintage Japanese Tanuki Figure, Shigaraki, circa 1960
A distinctive Japanese tanuki figure made of Shigaraki stoneware, dating from around 1960.
Dimensions: H 29 × W 17 × D 16 cm.
This tanuki wears its characteristic large hat and features a rounded belly that contrasts beautifully with the deep dark brown glaze. The finely incised details of the fur, expressive facial features and subtle grey-green accents give the figure an authentic character.
The figure carries traditional attributes, including a sake bottle and an account book, both decorated with Japanese characters. In Japanese folklore, the tanuki symbolises good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. These figures are traditionally placed outside homes, shops and restaurants to attract luck and wealth.
A beautiful example from the mid-Shōwa period, with a warm appearance that complements both Japanese-inspired and wabi-sabi interiors.
In good vintage condition.
